Spring (early April thru first week of
June)
Port of Rochester
The shallow, shoreline waters of Lake Ontario warm rapidly
during the early spring. The numerous creeks, bays and Genesee River
also provide warm run off water to help even more. Adding all this up
equals hot springtime fishing off Rochester.
These warmer waters attract thousands of hungry trout and
salmon annually. This offers prime fishing for trophy Brown Trout
(Monsters over 18 pounds are taken here every
year) along with Coho salmon, Rainbow (steelhead) trout and late
April , the mighty Chinook (king) salmon join in on the frenzy.
Most trout are in the 5-8 pound range with kings in the teens.
Double, triple and even quadruple hook ups at one time, are common!
The number of fish we hook into during early
spring are astounding with boat record of 54 fish during an 8 hour
charter!
During May we move out to a little deeper water to cash in on the
Steelhead feeding on surface temperature breaks (thermo bars) These
steelhead are actively chasing bait and bugs on the water surface on the
edge of these thermo bars. King Salmon move into these same waters
looking for warmer water and bait. Kings will typically suspend just
beneath the steelhead. With fish feeding
throughout the water column you can't go wrong!
The Coho Salmon fishery is on fire during this time also. Coho salmon
roam these same depths, in search of baitfish
schools and surface bugs. These salmon commonly weight 3-5 pounds,
with 7+ pound coho's taken regularly. These
coho's can provide non stop action and are prefect for the grill.
Springtime = Great numbers of feisty
fish that will cure them winter blues.
